BB opens SME department Thursday

Bangladesh Bank is going to open a separate department for small and medium enterprise on Thursday to encourage loans for small and medium enterprises.

Bangladesh Bank Governor Atiur Rahman would inaugurate the SME department that would run under the leadership of a general manager.

“Alongside agricultural loan, in future we will strengthen SME loans. The new department is being opened for the purpose,” Atiur Rahman told The Daily Star.

A high official of the central bank said the banks would be encouraged to provide SME loan in the way commercial banks were encouraged to give agricultural loans.

Banks giving SME loans would be provided with various incentives, siad a BB official adding the SME loan might be a tool to create employment quickly.
