The cabinet on Wednesday approved in principal the memorandum of understanding with New Delhi seeking open-ended import and export of power, with options to purchase power from both public and private sector of India.
The deal dubbed “Bangladesh-India Bilateral Power Exchange Memorandum” was initiated by a team of Bangladesh in November when they were visiting India on this purpose.
At a press briefing, Prime Minister’s Press Secretary Abul Kalam Azad said, “during Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s visit to India in January, the government will sign an agreement with Delhi based on this MoU.”
“As a result, both the countries will be able to sell or buy electricity from each other on the basis of availability, need and price,” he said.
This deal would allow Bangladesh to import up to 500 megawatts of power from India in near future, not just 100 megawatts power as was proposed earlier. Similarly, the deal allows the PDB to sell power to India when it has surplus.
Once the agreement between the two countries is signed, it will take at least two years to install equipment for inter-connectivity between the two countries.
