Yet another new year comes to us with new hopes and aspirations to make our lives happy and prosperous and bring peace across the globe.

Enthusiastic people around the world welcomed the new-year last night amid fanfare.

In Bangladesh, the new-year was welcomed, mostly indoors in a mood of subdued gaiety when a moderate cold wave is prevailing across the country.

People expectation in the new year is that the Government would take measures to control price hike of essentials and ensure security to their lives and property.

People also hope that the Government would work towards strengthening democracy and establish a society free from hunger and poverty, terrorism and corruption.

In the political arena, the year will be important for both the government and the opposition as the ruling Awami League is completing its one year in office in January leaving its many election pledges behind while the BNP announced that it has turned around from the setback which it suffered after the 1/11 changeover.

The present government is engaged in reorganising the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) previously called BDR following mutiny in its headquarters in February last year leaving 59 army officials killed.

The New Year would witness the execution of the killers of Bangabandhu and the government would begin the trial of war criminals.

BNP leaders said that they were contemplating to intensify anti-government movement if the government fails to implement its pledges. It remains unclear whether the treasury bench and the opposition would come up form their own position to make Parliament effective and turn it into the focal point of all activities.

Business leaders expect that they would be able to bounce back from the impacts of global economic meltdown and the economic activities would get momentum in the new year.

The government looks at attracting investment and export as major challenges for the new year.

In the international arena, all eyes are on global imitative to face the impacts of climate change and stop wars and aggression.

President Zillur Rahman, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Leader of the Opposition Begum Khaleda Zia in separate messages greeted countrymen on the eve of the new year.

Leaders of different political parties and organisaitons, including, BNP, Zaker Party, Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal, National People’s Party (NPP) and Tepaimukh Dam Prevention Committee also welcomed the people on the occasion.

Different socio-cultural organisations have chalked out various programmes to welcome the new year.
