A legal notice has been served on the government to constitute “National River Protection Commission” by the next seven days according to the High Court directives.
President of the Human Rights and Peace for Bangladesh (HRPB) Advocate Manzill Murshid issued the notice to the secretaries of seven ministries — planning, finance, forest and environment, LGRD and cooperatives, shipping, communications and water resources– in this regard.
In the notice, Manzill Murshid said a contempt of court case will be filed against them if they do not constitute the commission by the next seven days.
In June last year, the High Court in a verdict directed the government to form the commission consisting of experts concerned within three months to preserve and protect the country’s rivers.
The court also urged the government to make long-term and short-term plans based on the commission’s recommendations.
The full text of the verdict was pronounced on June 25 and published on July 15.
The judgment was delivered upon a public interest writ petition filed by the HRPB.
