A few coaching centres that prepare candidates for recruitment tests had been involved in the leak of question papers for assistant teachers at public high schools.

The candidates arrested along with some government employees at a guesthouse in Gangachhara upazila in Rangpur on July 8 made the revelation to police.

Police, however, did not mention names of any coaching centres for the sake of investigation.

It was found that the question papers could be taken out of the Bangladesh Government (BG) Press due to negligence of police in frisking press employees entering and leaving the restricted zone at the press.

The authorities yesterday temporarily suspended BG Press binder Shahidul Islam Fakir for not joining office despite being served with notice. He has been on the run since the leak of question papers.

The Public Service Commission (PSC) also temporarily suspended its administrative officer MA Rauf.

Police found Tk 28.5 lakh in Shafiar Rahman’s bank account with Janata Bank, CO Bazar branch in Rangpur, yesterday, a day after recovering Tk 95 lakh from his two bank accounts.

Shafiar Rahman, brother-in-law of detained BG press employee ATM Mostafa, admitted to police that he deposited all the money to the banks. Mostafa while on remand confessed to giving the money to Shafiar.

Police said employees of some coaching centres had been maintaining relations with the syndicate for long. They contacted some candidates and promised to give them jobs in exchange for money.

The candidates, who took lessons at the centres for Bangladesh Civil Service or other public recruitment exams, gave them money in the hope of getting jobs, said sources.

The probe committee formed by the BG Press authorities sought a few more days to submit its report.

Committee chief Abul Kashem said they are trying to find out security flaws and possible reasons behind the question paper leak.

The employees working in the restricted section, where the questions had been printed, were supposed to be frisked thoroughly. If the task had been done properly, the question papers could have not been taken out of the press, he said.

Press officials said there are two entrances to the restricted section at the press. Employees have to take off their clothes and shoes and put on a particular uniform without any pockets after crossing the first gate.

Police are supposed to frisk the employees in line with a press rule. Besides, a few BG Press officials are there to supervise the work.

Nearly 120 to 150 employees work in the restricted zone and they are not allowed to wear any undergarment. They are supposed to be frisked every time they come out of the zone during working hours.

If all employees were frisked thoroughly, it would not be possible to take the question papers out of the press, they said.

The officials however said since all employees come out of the zone at a time after completing their tasks, it might not be possible for the policemen to frisk all thoroughly.

Superintendent of Police Saleh Mohammad Tanvir said they are verifying the information given by the BG press and PSC staff about two PSC high-ups.

They would go for action against the two, if their involvement is found, he said.

Meanwhile, Rangpur District Council temporarily suspended its clerk Mohammad Alauddin, brother-in-law of detained BG press employee Hamidul Islam.

Detained BG press employee Abdul Jalil admitted to police that Mostafa’s wife and BG press binder Laboni Begum gave him Tk 28 lakh in presence of BG press administrative officer Khandker Mohammad Ali.

AMANI, a student of one of the most reputed private universities in Bangladesh has been selling flowers to the people passing the Bijoy shoroni circle. Every time the signal turned red, she approached the private cars and other vehicles wearing a t-shirt inscribing ‘JAAGO’ to sell flowers to the passengers. There were many young people on the roads doing the same thing. Some were selling popcorns, some flowers and some candy floss. Like Amani, many young students were on the roads of Dhaka on 18 November to remind people of their duties and obligations toward the children who are living a very miserable life.

Monju, a 12 year old boy, sells popcorn at Gulshan-2 circle. At this very tender stage of his life, instead of going to school, he has to support his family – his mother and 5-year-old sister. Everyday, he wakes up at 7 a.m. and spends his whole day on the roads selling popcorn to the people on transports. But 18 November is very different for him than any other day. He did not have to go selling popcorn. Rather, he is enjoying his time in Wonderland Amusement Park along with some of the children who sells flowers, candyfloss, candies and many other items on the streets. It is more like a dream come true for them. They do not have to rush towards cars or any vehicles to sell their products. These are the stories of Amani and Monju and there are many other similar stories that took place on 18 November. On that day, around 500 underprivileged rejoiced happiness across the city. This year, Jaago Foundation celebrated Universal Children’s Day with the underprivileged street children who face harsh reality in every single step of their life.

The day started with distributing breakfast among 500 children, which was not an easy job for the volunteers. But they managed to handle every thing properly. The kids were enjoying every bit of their time in the Wonderland. After the breakfast, they started roaming around and exploring the fascinating rides. The Wonderland authority privileged the kids by giving them a chance to ride all the rides as many times as they want for three hours. The joy knew no bounds for the kids. It seemed that they had the best three hours of their life as they were enjoying to the fullest. Lipi, one of the kids, could not even express how happy she was. She was riding only the bumping car over and over again.

Comilla Victoria Govt. College is one of the oldest colleges in Comilla as well as Chittagong division. It is the pride of the people of Comilla. Landlord of that time Roy Bahadur Anandra Chandra Roy had established the college on 24 September,1899.

Anandra Chandra Roy was a renowned patron of promoting and developing education in the district. He was a contractor by profession and accordingly set aside a large amount of money to establish a college for the development of higher education in Comilla. Comilla Victoria College was thus born to fulfill his long cherished dream.

In recognition of his noble endeavour th British Govt. awarded him the title “Roy Bahadur” after the establishment of the college. A white color sculpture was built in front of the main gate of intermediate section of the college to keep the memory of Roy Bahadur alive.

Reason behind the name of the college
Queen Victoria was the Empress of India from 1876 to 1901. At that time, Comilla was also under the rule of the Empire hence the college was named as “Comilla Victoria College.”

First principal of the college
“Sattendranath Boshu” was the first principal of the college. He was the headmaster of former Comilla Victoria School. He remained the principal of the college till his death. He was a scholar as well as a researcher of literature. He was also a professor of English and was awarded Rabindranath Prize for his outstanding contribution to literature.

Foundational status of the college
Comilla Victoria College started its journey with only 107 students and 7 teachers. There was only intermediate section at the time of beginning of the college and later honours section was started in 1918. There was only one classroom and an administrative building at the initial stage of the college.

Progressive period of the college
BSC Course and BCOM Course commenced in 1942 and 1956 respectively. The college started its night Shift program from 1958. Intermediate section and honours section were divided in 1962.The college was nationalized in 1968. Five more new departments were initiated in 1971 while Bengali and Economics courses commenced in 1973.

ICMA program was started from 1982. It gained the dignity of an University College during 1984-1985. More nine departments were included in 1996.

All the principals of Victoria College played a great role for the development of the institute. In this regard the name of Akter Hamid Khan is worth mentioning, who was also the founder of Comilla BARD ( Bangladesh Academy For Rural Development). The numbers of students of this college increased rapidly during his period.

Shushmita Ahmed

THE nation is going to venerate its 38th year of the victory with great esteem and fervour. There is a saying that the power of the collective memory is so strong that it can pass on from generation to generation for years to come. It is usually the case that when grievous crimes have been committed against a person, somehow, somewhere along the way, the perpetrators will be punished. If we look at the example of World War II we can see that the soldiers from Nazi Germany are still paying for the crimes which prove that no matter how long it takes, justice will inevitably prevail. In case of the Bangladesh Liberation War in 1971, however, one cannot give any guarantees. Not only did thousands of people willingly give up their lives for an independent nation, many mothers had to witness the brutal deaths of their sons, while others, to this day, did not have the comfort of burying the bodies of their loved ones. These are the people who have sacrificed their families for the birth of a free nation.

We, are greatly indebted to their sacrifice. Three decades have passed but the war criminals are yet to be punished for their heinous crime. So, we, the young generation are bearing a huge responsibility to stand up and act strongly against such injustice.
